Lyrics by LEE ADAMS
Based on the film All About Eve and the original sotry by MARY ORR
Opened March 30, 1970 at the Palace Theatre, New York

Plot Synopsis

APPLAUSE opened in New York at the Palace Theatre on March 30, 1970, and went on to win the Tony Award for "Best Musical" of that year.

The successful show was an adaptation by Betty Comden and Adolph Green of the classic film, ALL ABOUT EVE. The original production of APPLAUSE starred Lauren Bacall. Neither a singer nor an experienced stage actress, Miss Bacall walked off with the show as Bette Davis had done in the film. Others appearing in the original company of Applause were Canadian actor Len Cariou, who later starred in the Broadway production of SWEENEY TODD and Bonnie Franklin of TV's ONE DAY AT A TIME.

Betty Comden and Adolph Green adapted APPLAUSE for the stage. This highly successful team had been working together since college, and their first successful adaptation, was turning Leonard Bernstein's FANCY FREE ballet into the Broadway hit, ON THE TOWN. Since that time they have alternated between Broadway and Hollywood, providing original and inventive scripts and songs of unsurpassed wit and sophistication.
